The Asian runway invasion continues with Thom Browne’s latest menswear collection. Maybe inspired by the current Costume Institute’s China Through the Looking Glass exhibition, Thom set his sails to the land of the rising sun.
Sleek haired men with white painted faces, black lips and small dark sunglasses paraded the runway in their best kimono inspired suits. They were the male equivalents of the geishas but monochromatic, suave and sophisticated. I love that he respected the technique and left it to the traditional Japanese artisans to execute his vision. At first I thought it was embroidery but it was all done by patching multiple fabrics to attain these Japanese symbols. I bet every Thom Browne fan is already deciding which one to get. I love his use of geta too, hope to see them next year because I have been meaning to wear mine casually down the street.
